The A. Gettelman Brewing Company: One-Hundred and Seven Years of a Family Brewery in Milwaukee
A History of the A. Gettelman Brewing Company covers the period from 1854 to 1961 when it was sold to its next door neighbor, the Miller Brewing Company.

Accompanying the text throughout the 184 pages are 285 old photographs, newspaper clippings, and documents, some very old.

This treasury of information was taken from many scrap books, kept in protective custody by the last President of the brewery, Tom Gettelman.  This book was written with the hope that a reconstruction of this bygone era in brewing might awaken memories in those who experienced it and perhaps astonish others too young to have known it.

Little-known facts, like the19-year old disappearance of Aam Gettelman’s brother, Jacob, are recalled.  Also the reader will be delighted with the recounting of many humorous stories, some of which are told I the colorful Schoenste Lenguage depicting the early German influence in Milwaukee.

A full chapter is devoted to Gettelman’s innovative promotion and the advertising practices, from the pioneering days to the sophisticated avenues of contemporary business.  The book describes the effects that two world wars, Prohibition, the Depression and the 76-day strike of 1953 in Milwaukee had on the brewing industry.  The author has drawn from her storehouse of memories and first-hand knowledge of the events and working sin this important American industry.

How each succeeding generation of the Gettelman Brewery owners responded to the challenges of the times, and how each added something valuable of his own to the family business, is chronicled and illustrated.  The book concludes with the merger of Gettelman and Miller, after a friendship of 107 years.
